Case Study: Smart Holster System

Problem

Oficers and suspects often provide conflicting reports regarding the details of arrests and custody. Suspects frequently arrive in custody with injuries such as blunt force trauma, gunshot wounds, and internal bleeding. Officers typically claim these injuries result from suspects fleeing, resisting arrest, or defending the public’s safety. This lack of accountability and transparency has led to public distrust and numerous complaints against the police force.

Solution Proposed

Introduce body cameras to collect forensic evidence, protect officers, deter anti-social behaviour, and validate that suspects are handled lawfully. This solution aims to enhance transparency and accountability in law enforcement.

Innovation and Partnership

The project showcases a significant achievement in innovation by developing a new product through a successful partnership with a previously unknown IoT development company. This collaboration led to the creation of advanced smart holsters and automatic activation body cameras, setting a new standard for law enforcement technology.


  1. Automatic Activation Body Cameras:
    • Smart Belts with Smart Holsters and Cases: Developed innovative smart belts equipped with holsters and cases that automatically activate body cameras when any connected item (e.g., firearm, baton) is removed. This ensures consistent recording and reduces the operational burden on officers. The belts are constructed using a proprietary multi-laminate technique with ballistic-grade 1000 Denier Cordura Nylon, offering waterproofing, abrasion resistance, and durability. The belts feature a universal clip system allowing quick changes between different holders with 360-degree rotation and 16 locking positions.
    • Advanced IoT Integration: Partnered with the IoT development company to reconfigure advanced sensors and design secure, durable holsters with extended battery life. These holsters notify sensors to activate cameras and can alert nearby officers via encrypted wireless links when specific items are used. This integration of Holster Aware technology ensures real-time event alerts and automatic activation of body-worn cameras.

  1. UK-Style Tools and Training:
    • De-Escalation Tools and Training: Officers were provided with de-escalation tools and training based on UK policing techniques. The training included non-confrontational communication, information gathering, and non-lethal threat neutralization methods, such as CS/PAVA spray and tasers. Focused on body language, conversational techniques, and low-impact, high-control physical methods, the training equipped officers to handle situations non-violently before resorting to more forceful measures.

  1. Technical Sophistication:
    • VB400 Body-Worn Cameras: These cameras offer multiple connectivity options, including Bluetooth sensor monitoring for automatic recording activation, peer-assisted recording for capturing multiple viewpoints, and live streaming capabilities to improve situational awareness. The VB400 cameras can be wirelessly activated by the Holster Aware sensors, ensuring officers do not need to manually start recording in critical situations.

Pilot Result

  • Significant Reduction in Injuries and Complaints: Suspect arrest injuries and complaints decreased by approximately 85% during the pilot. This substantial reduction demonstrates the effectiveness of the body cameras and smart holsters in enhancing accountability and reducing excessive use of force.
  • Selective Use of Non-Lethal Tools: Tasers were used only twice in a four-week period with a sample size of 40 officers, indicating that officers relied more on de-escalation techniques and non-lethal methods.
  • Positive Officer Feedback: Officers appreciated the additional tools and training, which provided them with more options in the field. There was also a clear understanding among participants that the automatic camera activation increased accountability for all parties involved.
